Study Shows Significant Performance Gains from Integrated UPRT at United Aviate Academy

A recent study conducted at Aviation Performance Solutions (APS) has provided clear empirical evidence that integrated Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) is an effective mitigation for Loss of Control In-flight (LOC-I). Independently reviewed and validated by a former NASA/FAA human factors expert, the research confirms both the sound methodology and the significance of the findings.

The multi-year study evaluated student pilots from United Aviate Academy (UAA) before and after completing APS’s comprehensive, all-attitude UPRT program. When confronted with a surprise airplane upset scenario, pilots’ successful recovery rate improved from 16.4% before training to 86.6% after training—a 427% performance increase. This demonstrates that APS’s structured UPRT measurably strengthens manual handling skills, improves upset recognition, builds startle resistance, and increases pilots’ confidence and capability to prevent and recover from LOC-I events.

APS designed and delivers the UPRT curriculum integrated into UAA’s ab initio pathway. The program combines academic instruction, all-attitude on-aircraft training in the Extra 300L, simulator reinforcement, and APS’s EPIC-S2™ upset recovery strategy. By providing high-fidelity, experience-building upset training early in a pilot’s development, APS helps pilots build the practical skills, experience, and decision-making competence needed to manage unexpected aircraft upsets safely and effectively.
