APS Evaluates NASA Enhanced Upset Recovery Aerodynamic Model

July 15, 2011: APS President, Paul BJ Ransbury, had the unique pleasure of evaluating NASA’s most recent version of their Enhanced Upset Recovery (EUR) Aerodynamic Model at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA.

Conceptually and practically founded on the paper Dynamics Modeling and Simulation of Large Transport Airplanes in Upset Conditions, the joint Boeing/NASA EUR model represents a tremendous advancement in transport category airplane flight characteristics beyond both traditional shaker-limited fidelity up to CLmax and well beyond. The test profiles were provided through the Vehicle Systems Safety Technologies (VSST) project as part of the NASA Aviation Safety Program.

Representing two progressive industry organizations, the Royal Aeronautical Society’s International Committee for Aviation Training in Extended Envelopes (ICATEE) and the Upset Prevention & Recovery Training Association (UPRTA), with mandates squarely focused on the mitigation of the Loss of Control In-Flight threat to aviation safety, APS was affordable an opportunity to explore all aspects of the EUR model in relation to advanced stall recovery training and a wide variety of airplane upset events.
